How was the name "Dr. G.J. MacGillivray Public School" chosen and who was Dr. G.J. MacGillivray?

The name was one of three on a short list identified by a joint community/student/Board ad hoc school naming committee, which had advertised widely for submissions.

The committee received and considered 21 suggested names. Suggested names were submitted by students, parents, the community and staff. A parent in the community recommended the school be named after Dr. Gerard MacGillivray, a beloved pediatrician who played a major role in the lives of parents and children in the Clarington Region for more than 25 years.

The parent described Dr. MacGillivray as a "hero, supporter and friend" who cared deeply for children and their families, a view echoed in a letter of support from the Lakeridge Health Corporation's Chief of Staff. Sadly, Dr. MacGillivray died in June 2001.

The other two submissions considered by the Board were Preston Valley PS and Pauline M. McGibbon PS, after the popular former Lieutenant Governor, who passed away late last year.

Doctor Gerard MacGillivray
1943 to 2001

Gerry's goal was to be the best pediatrician he could be. He had a profound respect for his patients. He gentle, kind, patient, sensitive and understanding. Gerry graduated, cum laude from the University of Ottawa medical school in 1968 and received his fellowship in pediatrics in 1975 from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. He joined the Oshawa clinic as the consultant of pediatrics and was on the staff of Oshawa General Hospital, where over the years he was twice chief of pediatrics. He was also an honorary consultant at the hospital for sick children.

Parents appreciated his outstanding Pediatric skills. He willingly provided literature and reference material and spent time helping them understand their child's condition. Parents speak of his dedicated excellence, his calmness in crisis ongoing accessibility, and his willingness to provide emotional support.

Colleagues valued his clinical skills, commitment, and the thorough evaluation of the child's condition before requesting additional consultations. He provided input for revised national guidelines on Family-Centred Maternity and Newborn care. He was involved in research as the principal investigator in Oshawa for the Boston University birth defects study, and was a member of the Committee for National Neonatal Follow-Up of the Child Health Network of Greater Toronto. He was a member of the OMA Committee on Reproductive Care and the task force on Pediatric Diabetes in Durham region.

Gerry had a keen intellect and a curious mind. He was an active and compassionate advocate for child health. He saw the uniqueness of each child, and he worked to provide the specialized care to meet their particular needs. He delighted in the achievements of his patients and encouraged them to reach their maximum potential.

Gerry lost his battle with metastatic renal cell carcinoma in June, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Joan, and four children, Martha in Ottawa, David in Guelph, Jennifer and Patrick at home.

-Joan MacGillivray and Dr. Peter Lai Fatt, Oshawa Ontario.

Absentee reporting

Please call the school at 905-436-2054 to report a late or an absence.

If your child is to be dismissed early of is being picked up please send a note with your child rather than call the school. Due to the heavy volume of calls, it is becoming impossible to deliver numerous messages at the end of the day. Thank you for your cooperation.

Peanut allergy

We have a number of children who suffer from peanut allergies. To protect these children we are asking for your support in packing lunches that are nut free. This may seem like an inconvenience to some families but for these children it can be a matter of life and death. The staff and students have made a commitment to not bring peanut products in to the school. If a student brings a peanut item to school we will ask that student to eat lunch in the office area.

For more information about peanut allergies please visit;

Volunteers

Volunteers are an important part of any school community. There are lots of reasons for volunteering. Your children benefit as they see that you think learning is important. You will benefit as you'll get to know your child's teachers. The school benefits as the volunteers allow staff to do more for children to promote learning. The community benefits as you will learn more about your school and will be able to share information with your friends and neighbors.
